What kind of editing do you provide?
I provide copyediting services, which means I focus on spelling, grammar, punctuation, consistency, fact-checking, awkward phrasing, and incorrect word usage. I’m not a developmental/structural editor, and therefore I will not edit for plot structure, character development, and pacing. If you’re looking for a dev/structural editor I’m happy to recommend Deborah Nemeth and Mallory Braus.
I also provide proofreading services. For more information on proofreading see the question below or visit my services page.

How is proofreading different from copyediting?
Proofreading is a final review of material after it is laid out and in its final form. This stage focuses on typeset material to ensure proper layout and to eliminate any lingering typos, and should not include significant revisions or alterations. Most self-published authors will be interested in copyediting services and not proofreading, although proofreading can be handy for authors already in possession of ebook files (e.g., EPUB or MOBI files) who would like a final review of their books prior to publication.

What are your rates?
Rates vary depending on the length and type of work required. My rates are reasonable and in line with industry standards. Check out the Editorial Freelancers Association for a rough guide. Beware of those offering services at cut-rate prices — you often get what you pay for!
Ebook formatting and conversion projects are often priced at a flat rate for your convenience. Contact me for more information and a quote.

What forms of payment do you accept?
I accept PayPal, Interac e-Transfer (Canadian residents only) and checks (or cheques to us Canucks!) in Canadian or US dollars. I require a 30% deposit for projects with an estimate of $500 and above. The remainder is payable when I deliver the final product.

How soon can you take on my project? How long will it take?
My availability varies depending on my workload at the time, but I usually book projects two weeks to a month out. My standard turnaround is two weeks, although manuscripts of more than 100,000 words or less than 30,000 words may take more or less than two weeks to complete.

Converting your masterpiece into a professional-quality ebook doesn’t have to be a frustrating and time-consuming process. Simply provide me with the following materials and I will produce the necessary files to self-publish through the many online ebook retailers:
- Final manuscript file, preferably in Microsoft Word format
- Cover image, preferably in jpg or png format
- A unique ISBN (International Standard Book Number) — U.S. residents click here to purchase ISBNs; Canadian residents can obtain an ISBN for free from Library and Archives Canada. If publishing through Smashwords, their service will provide an ISBN for you
- Back cover copy or book synopsis (optional)
- Author bio or back-page marketing material (optional)
- A list of keywords for the book’s metadata. These include the book’s title, subject and themes, the author’s name, and any other identifying words or phrases
What ebook formats do you produce?
I produce high-quality EPUB and MOBI files, the two most important ebook files worldwide. EPUBs are the industry standard and are used by the majority of ebook retailers, including Apple, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, and others. MOBI files are used exclusively by Amazon for their Kindle readers and apps.
If you choose to publish through Smashwords I will format your existing manuscript (preferably in Microsoft Word format) to their strict style guide requirements. A properly formatted document allows you to publish through the Smashwords Premium Catalog, which is where you want to be.
